Keeping Your Pond Water Crystal Clear

Keeping your pond water crystal clear

Whether a small patio feature or an encompassing watergarden, clear water always adds to the attraction. Cloudy or murky water is a common problem that can be easily remedied with a few helpful hints. Every watergarden has specific needs due to size, placement, and environmental factors, but here is some general information to get you started.

Shade Requirements

Ponds that are in the sun for most of the day require 50-70% of their surface to be shaded. This can be achieved with:

Floating Plants
Water Hyacinth, Water Lettuce

Submerged Plants
Water Lilies

Marginal Plants
Plants grown alongside the pond.
Marsh Marigold

Oxygenating Plants
Act as natural filters in keeping your water clear – you should always include them in your watergarden.
Hornwort and Red Parrots Feather

Algae

There are several types of algae – floating and suspended algae need to be controlled. The algae that sticks to the sides of your pond, as well as in the rocks underwater, is considered beneficial. It actually competes with the harmful algae for food. Undesirable algae can be controlled by:

Oxygen
Aerate your water with a pump.

Barley Straw Pellets
In ponds over 100 gal, barley straw pellets will deprive floating algae of nutrients. A simple, inexpensive way to effectively clean your water
within 2-3 weeks.
