Composting

Compost
Healthy soil is of the utmost importance in successful gardens yet is something that many gardeners struggle with. The addition of organic material such as compost is an easy and inexpensive way to improve the condition of your soil. If you have a large area to amend, adding bagged compost can be quite costly so think about bulk compost.

Composting is beneficial because it:

  • Adds valuable organic matter, improving drainage and slowing compaction, especially in clay soils.
  • Improves the moisture holding capacity of sandy soils.
  • Reduces soil erosion and nutrient leaching.
  • Helps replenish beneficial bacteria in the soil, helping to keep plants healthy.
  • Provides plant nutrition.
Compost is excellent for amending depleted soils, enriching planting mixes, and enhancing the growth of turf and ornamental plants.
To amend soil, add compost to garden beds every year. Add an inch or two on top of the soil and dig this into the top 6 – 8 inches. For perennial beds, compost can be added and carefully worked into the top few inches of soil taking care not to disturb surrounding roots. Compost can be added either in spring or in fall.
