Small Space Trees

August 7, 2022

In a time when houses seem to be bigger, yet yards a lot smaller, it can be a challenge to find suitable trees for tight spaces. Here are some of our favourite choices for small space yards or for filling in as contrast amongst larger trees.

muckle plum

Muckle Plum

This hybrid of the Canadian plum and Russian almond is a compact tree with a nice rounded head. Pink blooms in early spring, green foliage turns a nice orange-red in fall. This plum is fruitless, at maturity measures 10-15 ft.

Spring Snow Crabapple

Spring Snow Crabapple

One of the most popular ornamental crabapples, covered in white flowers in Spring. Green leaves change to yellow in the Fall. A hardy, fruitless variety with a tight oval form. Grows to 20’ tall and 15’ wide.

Courageous Crabapple

Courageous Crabapple

This beautiful ornamental crabapple is a favourite of Hal in our garden centre. Foliage emerges bronze in spring, and is accented by masses of bright pink blooms.

Snowball Tree

Snowball Tree

Truly a tiny tree, the snowball tree is a large shrub from the Viburnum family, that is pruned into a tree form. Short trunks are topped with a round head of dark green leaves, and in late spring the tree is filled with white ‘snowball’ blooms. Foliage often has a pretty red/orange fall colour. Trees are typically about 8’ tall and up to 6-8’ wide, but can be trimmed to be kept even smaller.

Ivory Silk Lilac

Ivory Silk Lilac

This popular small space tree features a tidy oval head of green foliage. Quite appealing to pollinators, the tree features large creamy white blooms in June and July. Grows to 15’ tall, 10’ wide.
