Featured Peonies 2024

Greenland™ is proud to offer one of the most extensive selections of peonies in Canada each year. Our peonies are grown from robust, high quality 3-5 eye divisions from field grown plants and are blooming size (although they are not guaranteed to bloom in the first year). This page showcases a few of our favourite cultivars available in spring 2024.

*Please note, we do not take advance orders for perennials. Our perennials department is scheduled to open on April 19, 2024, so please feel free to give us a call at (780) 467-7557 on or after that date for availability information.

Herbaceous Peonies

Herbaceous peonies are your classic garden peonies – large, bushy, clump forming plants which die back to the ground in the fall and return the following spring from the roots. They produce large flowers which are often fragrant, and the stems can bend over under the weight of the blooms, necessitating support from a peony ring. Herbaceous peonies are universally hardy to zone 2, making them reliable almost anywhere on the Prairies, and they thrive in sunny locations with fertile, moist, well-drained soil.

Species Peonies

Species peonies grow naturally in the wild, and compared to other herbaceous peonies (which are hybrids bred over many generations by humans), they tend to be shorter in stature and can have unique and interesting foliage. The flowers are usually single and appear very early in the peony bloom season, before most other types. Because of their short stature, they usually don’t need support. They are also more shade tolerant than other peonies and are right at home in a woodland garden. Because they are not far removed from their parents, we are including primary hybrids on this list.

  • The leaves of this species are very finely cut and threadlike, unlike any other peony. It looks particularly unusual as it’s emerging in spring.
  • This species is very slow to establish and resents being disturbed. It will also go dormant early in the season, especially the first year in the garden. Plant in lean, well-drained soil, mark the spot well and do not disturb.
  • Very early season.
  • Ht. 60cm (24 in.)

Paeonia x smouthii

  • This is a primary hybrid with the fernleaf peony as one of the parents; single red flowers with yellow stamens.
  • Forms an attractive clump of finely cut, ferny foliage, which does not need support; the leaves are not threadlike as in the fernleaf peony.
  • Very early season.
  • Ht. 60cm (24 in.)

Itoh Peonies

Itoh (pronounced EE-toe) peonies result from crossing herbaceous peonies with tree peonies, and they combine the best traits of both. Expect exceptionally large flowers in unusual colours on very sturdy stems that don’t require support. Yet, they are nearly or just as hardy as herbaceous peonies, easily surviving zone 3 winters (and many gardeners in zone 2 report success as well). As an added bonus, Itoh peony buds do not secrete sap, so you won’t find ants crawling on them! These plants are herbaceous, dying back to a semi-woody base each fall. Even if the bottom 15cm (6 in.) dies back after an extreme winter, the plant will still emerge from underground in spring.

Tree Peonies

Tree peonies are woody shrubs, so they do not die back to the ground like other peonies do except after extreme winters. In Alberta, these are tender plants that require winter protection. Plant the graft union 15cm (6 in.) below ground level and mulch heavily for winter. The extra effort put into overwintering these is rewarded with very large showstopping flowers on sturdy stems that don’t require support. The buds also don’t attract ants. These peonies are unlike any others!
