Each year as new roses appear, Rosarians around the world unite to try these latest introductions. Whether it be for hardiness, garden performance, fragrance, disease resistance or simply bragging rights, there are always so many new selections worth a try. Here are some of our top picks for 2019
The Ancient Mariner
English Rose
Inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, this rose was one of the last English Roses released by the late David Austin (world renowned rose breeder) before his passing in 2018. This rose delivers an abundance of larger than life blooms on an equally oversize shrub. Flowers are a deep pink and heavily petaled (160+ petals), which pale to a lighter shade on the outer edges. Once fully open, golden stamens make their presence, adding to the charm of this variety. Flowers release a powerful old rose scent, blooming June to October on a 4′ x 3′ shrub. Excellent disease resistance, great cutflower. Zone 5

Following the footsteps of the introduction of “Canadian Shield” a few years back comes the latest in the series of Vineland’s 49th Parallel Collection of hardy roses for the prairies. This incredible rose produces a riot of blooms in a blend of exotic coral colours with a light rose scent. This low maintenance tidy shrub rose has a vigorous habit, growing 4′ in height with a spread of 4′. Tolerant of black spot and other rose diseases.
