Aphid Lion

Aphid LionPreys on:  Aphids, other sap-sucking insects and mites

 Description:
• Is the juvenile form of the lacewing.  Are often described as looking like alligators.
• Have large mandibles (jaws) that pierce and suck insects.

Comments:
• Particularily good aphid, leafhopper, mite predators.
• Keep garden humidity up and avoid chemical insecticides and herbicides.

LacewingsPreys on:  Aphids, other sap-sucking insects and mites

Description:
• Green colouration, net-like wings.
• Clumsy fliers

Comments:
• Lay eggs on tall strands, to keep eggs away from predators.
• Keep garden humidity up and avoid chemical insecticides and  herbicides.


Parasitic Wasp

Parasitic WaspsPreys on:
• Various wasps prey on various insects—aphids, spruce sawfly, birch.
• Leafminer, scale.

Description:  Various wasp forms, some with prominent egg laying organs.

Comments:  On yellowheaded spruce sawfly, the wasp attaches an egg on a stalk to the larvae’s head.  If you saw this, you would NEVER SPRAY, as you know the wasp is present.


Ladybird Beetle Larva

Description:  Grey-black with orange spots

Comments:
• Familiarize yourself with this!  Customers often come in looking to spray for these—ensure you inform them they are beneficial.
• Adults also feed on aphids.
• Keep garden humidity up and avoid chemical insecticides and herbicides.
• If buying and placing out in garden, ensure there is sufficient food present; if not, they’ll fly away.  Release in garden at night.


Stink Bugs

Stink BugsPreys on:  Variety of caterpillars.

Description:  Various forms will be seen - will generally have a large triangular plate on their back.

Comments:  Omits foul smelling substance when disturbed.
