Choosing, amending soils and more.
Q. I recently purchased a leaf blower/vaccum. When vaccuming, leaves are "mulched" into almost powder size particles. Can this "powder" be spread onto the garden and/or flower beds and offer any nutrients? If so, would it be better to do this now, in the fall, or wait until spring?
A. The fine mulch you end up with is fantastic for tilling into your garden beds – they offer more texture in the soil, and retain moisture as opposed to adding nutrients. Now is the time to add it to the beds – you should till it into the top inch or two of soil to help it start breaking down.
