Bulbs FAQs

Choosing and planting spring and fall bulbs and more.

Q.  What do I do with my tulips after they have finished flowering? I have left them in the ground before but the blooms never seem to be as prolific as the first year and they are much smaller plants. Is it best simply to yank them out and replant new bulbs each year? Can I dry them over the summer and replant?

A.  It’s best to leave them alone and let them pull all the energy from the foliage into the bulbs.  Unfortunately with many new hybrids, many are great bloomers the first year then not as great after that.  You can either leave them and see how they do next year, or simply pull up and replant, filling the hole with plenty of bone meal.
